There's nothing quite like wandering through a field of bright yellow sunflowers on a warm summer day—especially when your four-legged best friend gets to come along. Every summer, I look forward to finding the best sunflower fields across Northern and Central Illinois, camera in hand and my dog by my side.


One thing I've learned is that not every sunflower destination welcomes pets. After visiting these locations myself, I've put together a list of my favorite dog-friendly sunflower fields where you can enjoy beautiful blooms, stretch your legs, and make lasting memories with your pup.


This guide includes a mix of family farms and Illinois state parks, each offering its own unique sunflower experience. For every destination, I'll share where to find the sunflower field, when it's typically in bloom, and a few tips to help you plan your visit.

  1. Matthiessen State Park - Oglesby


Matthiessen State Park isn't just famous for its canyons and waterfalls—it also features a beautiful sunflower field that blooms mid-July to early August. A great place to keep up-to-date on sunflower blooms is the Starved Rock Hikers website. After admiring the flowers, continue your adventure on the park's scenic hiking trails. I recommend hiking down into the lower dells area!

Location and parking: Use the river entrance from Rt. 178 and follow the road straight back. Follow the signs to the sunflower field and you will see the parking lot.

  1. Heap's Giant Pumpkin Farm - Minooka


While best known for its fall attractions, Heap's Giant Pumpkin Farm also features beautiful sunflower fields during September. Shabbona Lake State Park offers visitors a peaceful sunflower field alongside beautiful lake views and miles of dog-friendly trails. It's an ideal destination if you're looking to combine flower viewing with a relaxing outdoor adventure. Sunflowers typically bloom around mid-to-late July and last about two or three weeks.

Location and parking: Just southwest of the intersection of the main access road heading toward the lake. There's a small parking lot that has a sign for sunflower field parking.

5. Kuiper's Family Farm - Maple Park


Kuiper's Family Farm hosts one of Northern Illinois' most popular sunflower festivals. While pets are not permitted during regular operations, the farm periodically hosts special dog-friendly events, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the sunflower fields with their four-legged friends. Be sure to check their website before planning your visit. Blooms typically occur from late August to early September.

Dog policy: Please read over their dog policy on their website. They typically allow dogs the last weekend of their Sunflower Festival. I found the best way to stay up-to-date on dog days is to follow their social media.

6. Richardson Adventure Farm - Spring Grove


If you're looking for endless rows of sunflowers, Richardson Adventure Farm is one of the best places in Illinois. Their sunflower field typically blooms in September and features thousands of blooms spread across acres, making it perfect for photos, strolling through the flowers, or simply taking in the views.
