Bond Falls Scenic Site is one of those places that makes you want to stop the car and stay awhile. Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the waterfall is surrounded by forest and cascading rapids, with several viewpoints and trails that make it easy to explore the area. If you're planning a trip through the Upper Peninsula, Bond Falls is an easy stop to add to your itinerary!

Location: Paulding, Michigan

Distance: 1 mile loop

Difficulty: Easy

Parking: Two options for parking. There's a main lower paved lot near the base of the waterfall that requires a Michigan Recreation Passport or vehicle fee ($11), or there's a free roadside upper parking area near the Bond Falls Outpost and dam. We parked in the main lower lot and it is a very short walk to view the falls.

Dogs: Allowed on leash

Best time to visit: Spring through fall for flowing water and accessible trails.

The Waterfall

Bond Falls is a beautiful multi-tiered waterfall on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River. Rather than one single drop, the river tumbles over several rocky ledges, creating a wide cascade surrounded by forest.

There are multiple places to stop and take in the falls, making it a great spot for photography. The different viewpoints give you the chance to see the waterfall from several angles, while the surrounding forest adds to the peaceful scenic setting.

One of the best things about Bond Falls is that you do not have to hike far to enjoy the waterfall. The main viewing area includes a short, accessible boardwalk with several viewing locations, making it a good option for visitors who want to enjoy the falls without tackling the more difficult portions of the trail. Beyond the boardwalk, some sections become more uneven and include stairs and rocky terrain, so the full loop trail is less accessible.

Tips for Visiting Bond Falls

Wear sturdy shoes. Some areas can be rocky or uneven, especially away from the main boardwalk. Some areas are slick after rainfall.
Bring bug spray.
Bring your camera. There are plenty of angles for photographing the falls, especially around the different viewing areas.
Visit after rain. Higher water levels can make the falls especially impressive. Just be careful on the rocky and wooden surfaces.
Bring your dogs. Bond Falls is a dog-friendly stop, making it an easy addition to a dog-friendly Upper Peninsula road trip.
